Manual Metal Arc Welding, also know as Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Flux Shielded Arc Welding or informally as stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coted in flux to lay the weld. An electrode current, in the form of either AC or DC from a welding power supply, is used to from an electric arc between the electrode and the metal to be joined.

Because of versatility of process and simplicity of its equipments and operation, shielded metal arc welding is one of the worlds most popular welding processes. The process is used primarily to weld and steels (including stainless steel) but Aluminium, Nickel and Copper Alloys can also be welded with this method.

The Paragweld ARC 400 (Indian Make) is a three-phase stick (MMA) welding machine with an output range of 40-400 A. It is part of the Paragweld ARC Series and is intended for fabrication shops, contractors and maintenance teams that weld medium to heavy mild steel sections with electrodes of up to 5 mm.
With electrodes from 1.6 mm to 5.0 mm, the ARC 400 can handle both light repair work and heavier structural joints. Typical uses include frames, supports, tanks, machinery bases and general fabrication. Use smaller electrodes for thin sections and root runs, and 4 mm or 5 mm electrodes for filling thick joints.

The ARC 400 has a listed efficiency of 85% and a power factor of 0.93, with a rated input power of 17.15 kVA on a three-phase 415 V supply. Its no-load loss is listed at 100 W. Switching the machine off during long breaks helps save power and reduces dust drawn in by the cooling air.
Class F insulation means the internal windings are designed for high operating temperatures. IP21 means the housing keeps out fingers and larger solid objects and protects against vertically dripping water. In practice, use the ARC 400 indoors or under a shelter, keep it off wet floors and away from rain.
