Manual Metal Arc Welding, also know as Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Flux Shielded Arc Welding or informally as stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coted in flux to lay the weld. An electrode current, in the form of either AC or DC from a welding power supply, is used to from an electric arc between the electrode and the metal to be joined.

Because of versatility of process and simplicity of its equipments and operation, shielded metal arc welding is one of the worlds most popular welding processes. The process is used primarily to weld and steels (including stainless steel) but Aluminium, Nickel and Copper Alloys can also be welded with this method.

The ARC 400 IJ is a heavy-duty stick (MMA) welding machine with a 40-400 A output. It suits structural fabrication, heavy plate work, tanks, frames and general maintenance where larger electrodes are needed. It takes electrodes from 1.6 mm up to 5.0 mm, so one machine can cover both fine and heavy work.
The ARC 400 IJ needs a three-phase 415 V AC supply (plus or minus 15%) at 50/60 Hz. It is rated at 17.15 kVA input power with a rated input current of 23.9 A and a power factor of 0.93. Ask an electrician to confirm your supply, breaker rating and input cable size before installation.
The 40-400 A range and the 1.6-5.0 mm electrode range give plenty of room. Use smaller electrodes at lower current for thin material and root runs, and 4 mm or 5 mm electrodes at higher current for filling and capping thick joints. Always stay within the current range printed on the electrode packet.
The force range controls arc force, which briefly raises the current when the arc length becomes very short. On the ARC 400 IJ it is adjustable from 0 to 100 A. More force helps prevent sticking and gives a more digging arc for positional welding; less force gives a smoother, softer arc.
The ARC 400 IJ covers 40-400 A with electrodes up to 5.0 mm and is rated at 17.15 kVA. The ARC 630I goes up to 630 A with electrodes up to 6.3 mm, but needs a much larger supply (35.89 kVA) and weighs 54 kg. If your work rarely goes beyond 5 mm electrodes, the ARC 400 IJ is usually the more practical choice.
The ARC 400 IJ has Class F insulation and an IP21 housing, so use it indoors or under cover and keep it dry. Its no-load loss is listed at 100 W, so switch it off when idle for long periods. Disconnect power before cleaning out dust, and check cables, lugs and the earth clamp regularly.
