PW MAG-1 is a copper-coated mild steel solid welding wire to AWS ER70S-6. It is used for MIG/MAG welding under a shielding gas and gives stable welding, good weld seams and low spatter. It is a general-purpose wire for mild steel fabrication in workshops, structural work and production lines.
PW MAG-1 is suitable for 100% CO2 and for argon-CO2 mixed gas. CO2 is economical and gives good penetration, while an argon-CO2 mix gives a smoother arc and less spatter, which helps on visible welds and thinner sheet. Choose the gas based on the job, the finish you need and your running cost.
PW MAG-1 comes in 0.8 mm, 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm diameters, all on DD 270 mm spools with a net weight of 15 kg per spool. The 0.8 mm size suits thin sheet and light work, 1.2 mm is the common size for general fabrication, and 1.6 mm is used at high currents on thick plate.
The 0.8 mm size runs on all Paragweld MIG machines, including the MIG 250F, which takes 0.8 to 1.0 mm wire. The 1.2 mm size needs a machine such as the MIG 400 Pro or MIG 400I, which take 0.8 to 1.2 mm wire. The 1.6 mm size needs the MIG 500 Pro, which takes wire up to 1.6 mm. In every case, match the contact tip size to the wire.
The thin copper coating protects the wire surface from rust during storage and helps it feed smoothly through the liner. It also improves electrical contact between the wire and the contact tip, which supports a stable arc. ER70S-6 wire also contains higher levels of manganese and silicon as deoxidisers, which helps when welding steel with light mill scale.
Store spools in their packing in a dry, covered place away from moisture, acids and dust, and do not open the packing until the spool is going onto the machine. If welding stops for a long time, cover the spool or put it back in a bag. Handle spools carefully, because a dropped or dented spool can tangle the wire and cause feeding problems.
