Manual Metal Arc Welding, also know as Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Flux Shielded Arc Welding or informally as stick welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode coted in flux to lay the weld. An electrode current, in the form of either AC or DC from a welding power supply, is used to from an electric arc between the electrode and the metal to be joined.

Because of versatility of process and simplicity of its equipments and operation, shielded metal arc welding is one of the worlds most popular welding processes. The process is used primarily to weld and steels (including stainless steel) but Aluminium, Nickel and Copper Alloys can also be welded with this method.

The ARC 630I is a high-current stick (MMA) welding machine with a 40-630 A output. It is meant for heavy structural fabrication, thick plate and work with large diameter electrodes. It suits fabrication shops and industrial users who need more current than a 400 A machine can supply.
The ARC 630I runs on a three-phase 415 V AC supply (plus or minus 15%) at 50/60 Hz. It is rated at 35.89 kVA input power with a rated input current of 50 A, so it needs a strong supply. Have an electrician check your connected load, breaker size, input cable and earthing before installation.
The ARC 630I accepts electrodes from 1.6 mm up to 6.3 mm diameter. The 40-630 A range lets you use small electrodes at low current and large 5 mm or 6.3 mm electrodes at high current for heavy joints. Always set the current within the range recommended on the electrode packet.

The ARC 400 IJ gives 40-400 A with electrodes up to 5.0 mm at 17.15 kVA. The ARC 630I gives 40-630 A with electrodes up to 6.3 mm at 35.89 kVA and weighs 54 kg. The ARC 1000 goes up to 1000 A but needs 57 kVA and weighs 89 kg. The ARC 630I sits in the middle for heavy industrial stick welding.
The ARC 630I weighs 54 kg and measures 630 x 320 x 640 mm, so plan for two people or a trolley when moving it. It has Class F insulation and an IP21 housing, so install it indoors or under cover with free space around the vents. Always use a proper earth and wear full welding protection.
