Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding or Metal Active Gas (MAG) welding, also known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is a semi-automatic or automatic arc welding process in which a continuous and consumable wire electrode and a shielding gas are fed through a welding gun. A constant voltage, DC power source is most commonly used with MIG/MAG, but constant current systems, as well as AC, can be used. There are four primary methods of metal transfer in MIG/MAG, called globular, short-circuting, spray, and pulsed-spray, each of which has distinct properties and corresponding advantages & limitations.

The Process became highly used in industry. Today, MIG/MAG is the most common industrial welding process, preferred for its versatility, speed and the relative ease of adapting the process to robotic automation. Unlike welding processes that do not employ a shielding gas, such as MMA, it is rarely used outdoors or in other areas of air volatility. A related process, flux cored arc welding, often does not utilize shielding gas, instead employing a hollow electrode wire that is filled with on the inside.

The MIG 500 Pro is the largest machine in the Paragweld MIG range, with an output of 50 to 500 A. It is built for heavy fabrication such as thick mild steel plate, structural steel, heavy frames and earth-moving equipment parts, where high current and large wire sizes are needed for deep penetration and a high deposition rate.
The MIG 500 Pro accepts wire from 0.8 mm up to 1.6 mm, with a wire feed speed range of 3 to 15 m/min. The 1.6 mm size is what sets it apart from the 400 A models. Paragweld supplies PW MAG-1 (ER70S-6) solid wire and PW FC 71T-1 (E71T-1) flux-cored wire in 1.6 mm on 15 kg spools, and both suit this machine.
The MIG 500 Pro runs on a three-phase AC 415 V supply (plus or minus 15%) at 50/60 Hz. Its rated input power is 19.5 kVA and its rated input current is 37.5 A, noticeably more than the 11.1 kVA of the 400 A models. Plan the supply cable, breaker and earthing for this load before installation. The output cable size is 50 sq mm.
The spec table lists a duty cycle of 100% and a rated output voltage of 39 V. Duty cycle is the part of a 10-minute period the machine can weld at the stated current before it needs a rest, and a high rating suits long seams and production welding. Actual performance depends on the current you run and the room temperature, so check with our team for your working conditions.
For work near the top of its range, a 500 A torch is the right choice. Paragweld supplies 500 A MIG torch spares including conical and tapered conical nozzles, a gas diffuser, insulator, tip holder, swan neck, a torch handle with switch, and liners in 3.5 m and 5.5 m lengths. Contact tips come in 0.8, 1.2 and 1.6 mm sizes, in both copper and copper-chromium-zirconium.
The MIG 500 Pro gives 50 to 500 A against 40 to 400 A on the MIG 400 Pro, and takes 1.6 mm wire where the 400 Pro stops at 1.2 mm. It draws 19.5 kVA instead of 11.1 kVA and weighs 36 kg instead of 30 kg. If most of your work is on thick plate or needs 1.6 mm wire, the 500 Pro is the better fit.
